Over the last few years I have carefully studied canine science. It’s seemed necessary (and it is necessary) for understanding, but there’s something else. There is something much deeper than learning the brain processes, learning theory, what happens in the nervous system and how the two make a dog act as he does. The heart!
Alongside studying dogs, I have also spent years learning how we can change our own lives through changing the mindset, working with the invisible force explored by quantum physics* and directing energy with intention. I guess this has been the science of my own life and my intentions, in the most, have formed perfectly.
"Quantum physicists discovered that physical atoms are made up of vortices of energy that are constantly spinning and vibrating, each one radiating its own unique energy signature. Therefore, if we really want to observe ourselves and find out what we are, we are really beings of energy and vibration, radiating our own unique energy signature"
Yet I have been making a grave mistake.
With an awareness that at our smallest part we are energy and everything else in the world is energy too – I have not made the connection between my own feelings, vibration, my accumulation of “stuff” and the behaviour of my dogs. This is crucial understanding, because the dogs live with me, they live my deep set emotions, they share the learned and habitual emotions inside that I’m afraid to air and face. Even the bits that I don’t know are trapped in me, the dogs feel them too.
How does this fit?
We have four dogs. An array of personality and needs they constantly seem to want something. Every two hours they are asking for something or other and because it’s four of them – there’s always something to do. I spend lots of time worrying that their needs are met, that no-one feels rejected and no-one is the slightest bit unhappy. Much more time than is natural - is spent worrying that they are OK. I project all sorts of needs onto them and like good, faithful friends they deliver.
Realisation is emotional. I realised that the dogs are giving me exactly what I need, the opportunity to care and look after someone who needs it. They are performing their role perfectly. They are literally my mirror (there’s a book on that you know).
(Disclaimer - I don't advocate many of the methods in this book but it's worth a read)
Back to the original point. As energetic animals – all of us. We can’t fail to carry energy in the air around us. Not like spectres or angels but like everything else in the world made of atoms, that vibrates.
Dogs are very special, more than we could possibly know. But if you don’t think that dog training is working so well for you and yours or it doesn’t feel like the right thing to do, perhaps take a look at what’s going on inside you. Because your personal energy could be doing more talking than your training. Maybe the shift needs to happen between our hearts and therefore our shared energy, for real change to occur. Maybe the reason for your dog's persistent frustrating behaviour is closer to home?
Thank you to Caroline at Canine Flow for persistently and patiently nudging me in the direction I needed to go!
